1 / 10

The legislative package defines the relations regarding applying for this purpose by female citizens who have expressed a desire to undergo mandatory military service on a voluntary basis, their military registration, conscription, assignment to the place of service, and the calculation of honorarium after the end of the service.

This was stated by the RA Minister of Defense Suren Papikyan during of the sitting of the NA Standing Committee on Defense and Security, presenting the legislative package of the draft law on Making Addenda and Amendment to the RA Law on Military Service and the Status of Servicemen and on Making Addenda to the RA law on Defense in the first reading for debate.

According to the Minister of Defense, it is advisable to set the mandatory military service period of 18-27-year-old female citizens to 6 months: conscription is set on March 1 and October 1 of each year.

It was noted that the draft defines the features of the organization of military conscription, as well as the possibility of female citizens refusing to undergo mandatory military service before being drafted for mandatory military service, assigning these citizens to designated training units without drawing lots.

It is also defined the possibility of them going into contract military service during the mandatory military service. According to the RA decision of the Government, an honorarium in the amount of 1 million drams is planned for them after completing the mandatory military service.

According to Suren Papikyan, the female representatives will complete the composition of the reserve force after the service and will be conscripted if necessary.

The co-rapporteur, the Committee member Vilen Gabrielyan highlighted the adoption of the draft, which, according to him, provides an opportunity for a new competitive field.

According to the Chair of the Standing Committee on Defense and Security Andranik Kocharyan, an important step is being taken in the direction of the reforms of the Armed Forces with the package of drafts. According to him, it will provide an opportunity to increase the qualitative indicators of the army.

According to the Deputy Chair of the Committee Armen Khachatryan, the draft is a brave initiative and it will motivate men to serve in the army.

According to the member of the Committee Arpine Davoyan, an important reform will be implemented in the field with the legislative package.

The Committee member Gegham Manukyan presented his viewpoint on the army.

As a result of the debate, the legislative package was endorsed by the Committee members. It was proposed to debate the issue in the upcoming plenary sitting within 24 hours.
